With our appetite for travelling the world continuing to grow, travel and tourism experts Hills Balfour have researched hotel developments across the globe and discovered a diverse selection to help travellers plan their next bucket list trip for 2020.

They have shared with HotelView a range of hotels on the horizon, including affordable options in Washington D.C. and Thailand, luxury getaway spots in Sri Lanka and Illinois, as well as wellness retreats in Namibia and Florida.

Hotel Drover, Fort Worth, Texas (opened January)

Hotel Drover Fort Worth

This new Autograph Collection boutique hotel, opened in the historic Stockyards district in January and honours the legendary cowboys who drove cattle across the plains to market in Fort Worth. The four-star hotel will features 200 guest rooms and a signature restaurant, 97 West, where executive chef Jenna Kinard prepares fresh regional cuisine.

ALOFT Hotel at District San Juan, Puerto Rico (opening in the spring)

ALOFT Hotel, pictured top of page, in the Convention Centre in the heart of the city, is tipped to be one of Puerto Rico’s most exciting new accommodation offerings. Promising to inject the local scene with style, innovation and energy, this modern hotel will offer a buzzing atmosphere for a new generation of travellers – young in age and young at heart – looking for social experiences at competitive rates. ALOFT will offer 175 loft-like guest rooms set over seven stories, a rooftop infinity pool, a 1,152 square-foot fitness centre and a range of open spaces.

The Hotel Seiryu Kyoto Kiyomizu, Japan (opening March)

The Kyoto Kiyomizu Elementary School, which opened in 1869 and played a huge role in Kyoto’s history and traditions, is set to be reborn as a luxury hotel comprising of 48 guest rooms, restaurants, private baths and a gym. Guests can explore the culture of Kyoto with shrines, temples and historic landmarks close by. The hotel will be a 10-minute walk from the Kiyomizu-dera Temple, part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site ‘Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto’.

Ritz Carlton Scottsdale ArizonaOverlooking the mesmerising Camelback Mountain, this 215-room, 20-acre resort will be inspired by its surroundings. While the restaurants will feature ingredients that have been carefully sourced from the resort’s orchard and garden, the spa will use treatments that have been inspired by the Arizona deserts. The Pittman Hotel, Dallas, Texas (opening summer 2020)

Habitas, Namibia (opening late 2020)

Over the last few years, Namibia’s hotel scene has enjoyed a major renaissance, and the new Habitas hotel will be focused on fostering personal development and connecting people to nature through shared experience. Just half an hour from Namibia’s capital, Windhoek, and set in a 35,000-acre private reserve, its 15 rooms sit on a hilltop alongside a restaurant, a pool and a fire-pit area to lounge in. Activities will include nature walks and safari drives.

Washington D.C. and Los Angeles

There are a huge number of hotel launches to come in major US cities, and in the next year alone, Washington will welcome Riggs, Thompson, and the Meringer Hotel, which will be joined by the likes of Generator and Citizen M which are adding to the city’s cool yet affordable accommodation options.
Los Angeles will also see a flurry of new openings, particularly in Hollywood with the Godfrey Hotel, The Pendry, Thompson, and Tommie Hotel. Other 2020 openings in Los Angeles will include Fairmont Century Plaza, the W Los Angeles Downtown, The Cambria Hotel Los Angeles (Downtown), and Citizen M Los Angeles Downtown.
