On yer bike as The FINCH is rebooted from motel to whimsical hotel amid the Walla Walla winelands of Washington

The FINCH in the beautiful Walla Walla winelands of Washington makes its entrance as a modern 80-room hotel after a grand transformation from a small motel built more than 50 years ago.

The architecture is inspired by its community and features an open-air design, an outdoor fireplace, top of page, and community gathering spaces that encourage guests to interact with other guests and locals alike.

Refreshed and renovated from the original motel built in 1967, guests will see elements of the original architecture mixed with new, modern details and multiple gathering spaces that encourage guests to take in the natural beauty of the area and relax with a glass of Walla Walla wine.

“Walla Walla is a destination that has something for everyone, and The FINCH will serve as the perfect base camp for our guests,” says general manager Matt Skaletsky.

“This hotel reflects the beauty and innovation of the region, offering a modern, comfortable and creative space to explore, indulge and relax. We look forward to welcoming guests just in time for one of the most festive times of the year in wine country.”

Ron Williams, CEO of Visit Walla Walla, adds: “The FINCH fills a much-needed niche in our downtown area. Our historic district will now be anchored at one end by the venerable Marcus Whitman Hotel, and the other by the FINCH, between Whitman College campus and the east end of our award-winning Main Street.

“The entire town is happy to welcome this reboot of a mid-century modern motor lodge, transformed it into a contemporary, fun and whimsical hotel.”

In the hotel reception, guests are welcomed with coffee from Walla Walla’s Livit Coffee Co and a selection of herbal teas. The custom-designed Map Room, along with complimentary Field Guide travel journals upon check-in, will inspire guests to explore the region from every angle.

Custom wall installations created by regional artists feature in each of The FINCH’s modern guestrooms, inspired by Walla Walla’s food, wine and outdoor culture.

For example, Yogesh Simpson, a Whitman College graduate, designed an infographic depicting the soil compositions of wineries in the southwest to northeast Walla Walla regions.

Walla Walla, twice voted the friendliest small town in the United States, established itself as a leader in Washington wine production in the 1970s and 80s and is home to some of the world’s distinguished wine producers including Va Piano Estate, Gramercy Cellars and Woodward Canyon.

Spanning almost 3,000 acres, the Walla Walla region boasts more than 120 wineries that produce excellent Cabernet Sauvignons, Merlots and Syrahs.

It is also known as the road cycling capital of Washington, where paved trails run through historic and business neighbourhoods, along rolling hills and past the wineries and golden farmland.

For those traveling with bikes, The FINCH has a tune-up station on-site as well as multiple storage options, perfect for those planning a biking excursion around the Valley. The FINCH will also provide two cruiser bikes for guest use, purchased from nearby Allegro Cyclery.

Rates begin at £125 per night.
